Andy Carroll spoke on what it meant to him to score while nasty rumors (which you'll notice we have not dignified in this space) swirled around him and Kevin Nolan. (Dan King, NUFC Official Site) Chris Hughton says he has had confidence in Andy even while he's been making news off the pitch. (Luke Edwards, The Journal) Hughton is backing Carroll for England...again. (Lance Harvey, The Guardian) Joey Barton is also urging Capello to look past the headlines and pick a quality striker in Andy. (Ben Collins, Sky Sports) The Guardian supports Carroll over Bolton's Kevin Davies.
Tim Krul speaks about his clean sheet against what he calls "probably one of the best teams in the world." (Lee Ryder, The Chronicle) Toonsy of nufcblog.org says that Krul may have created a goalie controversy.
Chris Hughton's reserved nature means that his emotional moments get noticed when they do happen. Hughton called Sunday's win one of the most "special moments" of his career, which is really saying something. (Lee Ryder, The Chronicle) Video - from BBC Sport
Arsenal will appeal the red card given to defender Laurent Koscielny following his "free path to the goal" foul on Nile Ranger. (ESPNSoccernet)
Paul Fraser of The Northern Echo writes a glowing piece about Hughton's reign here, which of course ends with a plea to Mike Ashley to give him an extension. Ian Wright of The Sun uses a lot of hyperbole to say that Ashley should have already gotten an extension done.
Jonas Gutierrez prefers Chris Hughton as a manager over Diego Maradona. (Brian McNally, MirrorFootball)
If there's one thing I hate about the Premiership, it's the arrogance of the big clubs who think they're entitled to any good player on the "lesser" teams. Both Arsenal and Chelsea are rumored to be circling around Andy Carroll, despite repeated statements by Chris Hughton and others that he is not for sale. It is worth noting that the primary source for one of these rumors is News of the World, and we all know their recent track record regarding this club. (both links from CaughtOffside)
The "Daydream Believer" incident during the Tyne-Wear Derby is surely old news by now, but that didn't stop Brian McNally of MirrorFooball from getting up on his high horse and lecturing northerners about how children could have heard their naughty language.
